More Information About the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons
For over thirty-five years the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons has helped its members meet the needs of their patients and the changing practice of surgery. Fellows of the ASAS have been able to confidently count on their Society to provide continuing education programs that are approved by ACCME for Continuing Medical Education for Physicians and are given towards the Physician's Recognition Award by the AMA.
These courses, which include the Clinical Congress of Abdominal Surgery and the Hepato-Biliary Symposium, have been held at home and abroad. Locations of some past meetings include Tampa, Tokyo, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Miami Beach, Florence, New Orleans, Stockholm, Las Vegas, Dublin, Honolulu, Warsaw, San Francisco, Paris, and Hong Kong.
The official scientific publication of the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, the journal Abdominal Surgery, is the only periodical devoted exclusively to the field of Abdominal Surgery. It is dedicated to providing important variety to the practicing abdominal surgeon. The journal is for the working Abdominal Surgeon, and its articles are written by him.
The Surgeon, a periodic newsletter, will keep you in touch, at least quarterly, with your Society and its activities.
Membership in the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons offers professional and public recognition for the achievements of training and education. In addition to representation at the AMA House of Delegates by one Delegate and one Alternate Delegate, the Society has six seats in the Section Council on General Surgery. The ASAS also grants a distinguished Service Award at each annual Clinical Congress. This award is given to a surgeon who has made an important contribution in his field. Some of the physicians who have been recipients of this award include
The ASAS also has an active Auxiliary for the spouses of its members. The Auxiliary conducts a number of special programs during each of the continuing education sessions. These activities are unique to the city of each meeting, and are planned to be enjoyable for the spouse and family of the member attending the scientific meetings.
At our National Study Center in Tampa, Florida, a member of the Society can do post-graduate work and vacation with the family at the same time. The Center is fully equipped to meet the educational needs of the practicing abdominal surgeon.
